Play Therapy

Play Therapy helps children process traumatic experiences and upsetting events that have impacted their lives.  Play is the natural way for children to communicate and express themselves, which is why Play Therapy is a such an effective, non-threatening intervention for children.
Play is vital to every child’s social, emotional, cognitive, physical, creative and language development. It helps make learning concrete for all children and young people including those for whom verbal communication may be difficult.
Play Therapy helps children in a variety of ways. Children receive emotional support and can learn to understand more about their own feelings and thoughts. Sometimes they may play out traumatic or difficult life experiences in order to make sense of their past and cope better with their future.
Children may also learn to manage relationships and conflicts in more appropriate ways.

A bit about me

Having worked in childcare for over 25 years I decided In 2012 to begin my training into becoming an art teacher.

However, when i completed my Fine and applied arts degree I felt anxious about my future in teaching.

I then decided not to to start my PGCE straight away and took some time out to volunteer in some local primary schools. What I found in these schools led me to become the play therapist I am today.

Unfortunately, I felt helpless and ill equipped to deal with these vulnerable children, they were unable to cope with their big feelings.

This is when I found out about play therapy.

The whole concept just made sense, and I decided to start training as soon as possible. I felt exited about my future and couldn’t wait to get started.

So today?

Well my work is hard and I am faced with challenges most days, but I am enjoying every minute. Helping children and their caregivers gives me a huge amount of satisfaction and I am grateful for everyday.
